For one local high school student, tutoring from university students gave him the tools to bring home a perfect report card.
Tracy Harris, the administrative assistant for Student Development Services, said her son Garrett got grades “between a high B and an A” in his math courses before participating in tutoring sessions offered by the College Resource Committee of the Staff Assembly.
After taking part in the program, Garrett was able to achieve and maintain an A average.
“Garrett’s math teacher commented on his confidence level being much higher in the classroom, which is really what he needed to get to the A level,” Harris said.
This semester, the College Resource Committee will host free tutoring for children of university faculty and staff on Monday and Tuesday nights Feb. 3-25.
According to committee member Matt Millns, the group “aims to educate parents and encourage students to attend college.”
Throughout the year, the committee offers events including a High School Senior Night, a guided tour of campus and a writing workshop to help students successfully transition into college.
The free tutoring was so successful in previous spring semesters that an additional set of sessions was offered during the Fall 2013 semester.
The program is open to 6th through 12th graders whose parents are faculty or staff members at the university. It offers the opportunity to be tutored in any subject by a current TCU student for as many sessions as desired.
Benjamin Yoder, a junior business information systems and marketing double major, said volunteering with the program is a great way to give back to the campus community.
“It’s rewarding to know that you are empowering these students, so that on days when tutoring isn’t offered they have the confidence to figure their work out on their own,” Yoder said.
