After winning their first two matchups by a combined score of 10-1, the TCU baseball team couldn’t complete the sweep against Jacksonville Sunday afternoon, losing 2-0.

TCU had four different batters strike out and only mustered up three hits in the loss.

The Dolphins got the first two hits of the game in back-to-back at-bats. Jacksonville left fielder Dylan Dillard grounded into a double play to keep the Dolphins from capitalizing, however.

Jacksonville third baseman Drew Luther had two hits and a run in four at-bats during the win.

The Frogs got their first hit of the game in the bottom of the second off a single from senior right fielder Dylan Fitzgerald.

Unfortunately for TCU, junior third baseman Garrett Crain struck out on the ensuing at-bat, ending the inning and keeping the game scoreless. Crain had three hits and a run in seven at-bats.

Much like Saturday’s 5-1 win over Jacksonville, Sunday’s contest remained scoreless until about halfway through.

In the top of the fifth, the Dolphins took advantage of Alexander’s inexperience and mustered up three straight singles. Sophomore pitcher Alex Young came in as Alexander’s relief pitcher with two outs and the bases loaded.

Despite a shaky start and finish, freshman pitcher Tyler Alexander had a decent showing in his first career start. The left-hander from Southlake Carroll finished the game allowing one run and six hits in 4.2 innings pitched.

Alexander was drafted in the 23rd round of the 2013 MLB Draft but chose to come play for the Frogs this season instead.

Young would hit center fielder Cameron Gibson with a pitch on the ensuing at-bat, giving the Dolphins the first run of the game and their first lead of the series.

The left-handed pitcher minimized the damage though, striking out the next batter to keep it 1-0 Jacksonville. Young allowed zero hits and one run in his relief pitching duties.

In the bottom of the fifth, junior center fielder Cody Jones hit a double and then advanced to third base off a wild pitch. Once again, the Frogs couldn’t capitalize as sophomore left fielder Boomer White struck out with a full count to end the inning.

Junior first baseman Kevin Cron was stranded at third base in the bottom of the sixth after junior shortstop Keaton Jones struck out.

Dolphins pitcher Justin Russell smothered the Frogs’ offense for most of the contest, allowing only four hits and zero runs in seven innings pitched.

Jacksonville extended their lead to 2-0 in the top of the eight after Gibson scored an unearned run off a double from Dillard.

With two outs in the bottom of the eighth and Cron at first base, junior designated hitter Jerrick Suiter lined out to right field to end the inning. Suiter was 0-for-4 in the loss after scoring two runs during Saturday’s win.

Down by two in the bottom of the ninth, TCU had one more chance to at least tie the game.

Fitzgerald started the inning by reaching first base on a fielding error. Keaton Jones was then unintentionally walked on the ensuing at-bat.

Freshman third baseman Will Fox sacrificed a groundout to get Jones on second and Fitzgerald on third before junior catcher Jeremie Fagnan came in to pinch hit for senior catcher Kyle Bacak.

Fagnan was hit by a wild pitch and the bases were loaded with one out.

Cody Jones then struck out and the Frogs’ fate rested in the hands of White. He made contact but lined out to the Jacksonville shortstop and the game was over.

The Frogs fall to 2-1 with the loss while the Dolphins improve to 1-2.

TCU will next face Northern Colorado on Tuesday. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. CT.
