TCU opened its weekend series with the No. 24 Oklahoma State Cowboys strongly Friday night, scraping by with a 3-1 victory.

The Horned Frogs took advantage of strong pitching from starter Brandon Finnegan and reliever Riley Ferrell to secure the victory.

Finnegan, now 5-2 on the season, pitched seven full innings in the victory, giving up just one run on five hits with eight strikeouts and three walks. Ferrell worked the last two innings, picking up the save in the win.

The Frogs scored all three of their runs in the very first frame by taking advantage of Oklahoma State mistakes.

Senior outfielder Dylan Fitzgerald led the attack with a single before junior first-baseman Kevin Cron was hit by a pitch. Cowboys starter Jon Perrin then threw a wild pitch, advancing both runners.

Hot-hitting sophomore outfielder Boomer White then hit a single to drive in one run. Junior infielder Derek Odell then hit a grounder to drive in the second run, and the third was gained off of an Oklahoma State fielding error.

The Cowboys picked up a run in the fourth inning off of a Horned Frog error after Conor Costello broke up Finnegan’s no-hitter with a double to left-center.

Oklahoma State did threaten again in the ninth inning, putting the tying run on base by way of a lead-off walk and a one-out single. However, Ferrell got a ground out and forced a pop out to end the game.

With the win, the Horned Frogs move to 15-10 on the season, 2-2 in conference. The Frogs and Cowboys will play game two of the series today at 3 p.m. in Stillwater.

Junior right-hander Preston Morrison will start on the mound for TCU.
