The TCU baseball team beat West Virginia 4-3 in a late ninth inning comeback on Friday night at Lupton Stadium and won the first game of a three-game series.

The Frogs (17-12, 3-4 Big 12) trailed the Mountaineers (16-9, 2-1 Big 12) by two runs going into the ninth. The score was 3-1 with West Virginia in the lead when TCU’s Boomer White drove in the first run of the ninth inning and Dylan Delso scored.

Kevin Cron then popped up a sacrifice fly and Cody Jones scored the run for TCU by jumping onto home plate after missing home plate the first time.

“It looked like a glowing dish right there,” Jones said. “So I jumped and I slapped the plate and I just heard the place erupt. It was the greatest.”

The score was tied when Jeremie Fagnan walked to first base and Dylan Fitzgerald stepped up to the plate. Fitzgerald hit a sacrifice fly, which won the game.

“What I was looking for was a ball up,” Fitzgerald said. “I got my pitch, first pitch, and put a good swing on it. Put it in the air and win for the Frogs.”

The team rushed out onto the field after Odell came in to home plate as TCU won 4-3.

TCU had two pitchers in Friday’s game, Brandon Finnegan and Trey Teakell.

Finnegan pitched for 5 innings before trading out with Teakell during the fifth inning. Finnegan threw seven strikeouts, walked three players, allowed four hits and two runs.

Teakell pitched for three innings and allowed two hits and one run. He threw four strikeouts and no walks.

“Teakell pitched well enough and kept the game close enough to give us a chance in the last inning,” TCU head baseball coach Jim Schlossnagle said.

West Virginia’s Harrison Musgrave pitched for seven innings. He allowed seven hits and one run, according to the official stats. Musgrave threw five strikeouts and walked two players.

“We had more hits than they did,” Schlossnagle said. “We just didn’t have enough timely hits and I thought that he’s really good. Musgrave’s really really good.”

The Horned Frog baseball team will play a double header against West Virginia on Saturday starting at 2 p.m. in Lupton Stadium.

“We have to honor this game by playing well tomorrow,” Schlossnagle said.
