Churches in the 109 offer different ways to celebrate Easter that suit a variety of worship styles.

Starting at 7 p.m. on Good Friday, Southcliff Baptist Church will host a special Tenebrae service.

Southcliff Baptist Share Pastor Stu Cocanougher describes the service as “very dark.”

“This service is a contrast to the Easter service- Tenebrae focuses on the crucifixion and death of Christ,” he said. “The service focuses on the death of Christ in order to appreciate the resurrection of Christ on Easter day.”

Bounce houses, food and an Easter Egg hunt will be all part of a block party at 10 a.m. on Saturday. That’s when Southcliff will partner with Wedgwood Baptist Church and the Global Fountains ministry to host an Easter Festival for residents of the Fountains Apartments located across the street from Southcliff.

“Many of the residents there are refugees from all over the world including places such as Iraq, Burma, Pakistan, Nepal and Africa,” Cocanougher said.

Southcliff’s church family is made up of individuals of various ages, ethnic backgrounds, educational levels, and financial statuses, Cocanougher said.

“Our uniqueness can be found in our diversity,” he said.

There will be two identical Easter services at 9:20 a.m. and 11 a.m. on Easter Sunday. The services will also be broadcast live on www.southcliff.com for those who cannot attend the service. For more information, visit www.southcliff.com .

Arborlawn United Methodist Church has events going on to celebrate Easter as well.

A Maundy Thursday service and a Good Friday service will be held. The church will also have their first ever sunrise service at 7 a.m. Easter Sunday.

“During the service we try to tell the ancient story of what happened on Easter in a creative way,” Senior Minister Ben Disney said. “The idea is to tell an ancient story and give it modern meaning. It is authentic and genuine.”

St. Stephen Presbyterian Church Holy Week services will continue until Wednesday with services from noon to 1 p.m. that discuss different parables.

“Everyone appreciates the beauty of the church on the outside,” office administrator Judy Greathouse said. “But even better, is the happiness and friendliness of the people inside.”

On Maundy Thursday, four different services will be held. The first is at 7 a.m., and breakfast will be available. Another service will be held noon to 12:45 p.m. A child-friendly worship service will be held from 5:15 – 5:45 p.m. The day’s last service is scheduled for 7 p.m. – 8 p.m. with dinner to follow.

Good Friday worship services start at 12:05 p.m. – 1:15 p.m. The Easter Prayer Vigil begins at 6 p.m. Good Friday and will continue through midnight on Saturday. Three Easter Day services are scheduled starting at 7:30 a.m., another from 8 a.m. – 9:30 a.m. and one is scheduled from 11 a.m. – 12:15 p.m.
