ESPN Dallas writer and TCU alum Richard Durrett dies

ESPN Dallas reporter and TCU alumnus Richard Durrett died Tuesday, according to multiple sources.

“We are deeply saddened by the loss of Richard Durrett, who covered the Texas Rangers and other sports for ESPN Dallas for the past five years,” ESPN Digital & Print Media VP & Editorial Director Patrick Stiegman said in a statement.

Durrett, 38, joined ESPNDallas.com in September 2009 and wrote about colleges, the Dallas Stars and the Texas Rangers, according to ESPN.com. He also spent nine years at The Dallas Morning News.

“He was a dedicated colleague and friend, who was extremely respected and well-liked,” Stiegman said.

“He will be deeply missed by his friends, colleagues and many sports fans he enlightened every day. Our thoughts are with his loved ones, including his wife, Kelly, and two children, Owen and Alice.”

Durrett graduated from TCU in 1998 with a B.S. in Radio-TV-Film. He also served as a professor for TCU’s College of Communication.

The Texas Rangers announced Wednesday plans to establish a fund for Durrett’s family.

Donations can be made here or through the mail at Richard Durrett Family Fund, Texas Rangers Baseball Foundation, 1000 Ballpark Way, Suite 400, Arlington, TX 76011.
