A new lactation room is open for nursing mothers on campus.

Located in Jarvis 123, Human Resources built the room to comply with the laws set with the Affordable Care Act said Susan Oakley, director of employee relations.

“We think we did more than comply with the law because it is a nice room and it is comfortable,” Oakley said. “We also want to provide a good working environment.”

Those that employ more than 50 people must provide “a place, other than a bathroom, that is shielded from view and free from intrusion from coworkers and the public, which may be used by an employee to express breast milk,” according to the Affordable Care Act Title 29 U.S. Code 207,

Before this space opened, Oakley said staff members used empty conference rooms and offices.

“Now there is a place people can go,” Oakley said.

Inside of the Mother’s room are a table and chairs, a storage cabinet, a refrigerator, a coat rack, hand sanitizer and a paper towel dispenser. The light purple walls also feature works of art.

“We wanted the room to be relaxing and calm, so I tried to find artwork that fit that,” said interior designer Lisa Aven.

Women can enter the room with the swipe of their TCU ID card. Students, faculty, and staff must contact Oakley to register for card access to the room.

“TCU has over 2,000 employees,” Oakley said. “That is a lot of women and a lot of young women, so I think there is a lot of need for it.”

Oakley also mentioned another room will be located inside of the newly renovated TCU library. She said she thinks this will be a more convenient option for mothers located on the other side of campus.

Human Resources will host an open house of the Mother’s room in Jarvis Hall on June 24 from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
