This year’s College of Education Green Honors Chair Dr. Michael Ungar will be on campus Tuesday Sept. 30 to speak about ways to support struggling children and teens.
Dr. Ungar is a researcher, professor and family therapist who specializes in the study of resiliency in children and how families and other support systems can help them overcome adversity.
The College of Education is sponsoring his presentation, “Too Safe for Their Own Good: How to Make Our Kids More Resilient by Not Overprotecting Them,” at 5:30 p.m. on Sept. 30 in the Amon G. Carter Lecture Hall, Palko 130.
Professor of Counseling and Counselor Education at TCU Dr. Frank Thomas said that students can take a lot away from this presentation.
“He is really a serious researcher that travels worldwide,” Thomas said. “His examples, stories and experiences are going to be worldwide and real to life. They’re not just coming out of some book or from sitting in a laboratory.”
In his research, Dr. Ungar has observed a connection between how we shelter children today and the negative behaviors they begin to adapt, such as drug abuse, early sexual activity and a lack of responsibility.
