Filling a water bottle at the rec center may soon help lessen TCU’s environmental impact.

The House of Student Representatives passed a bill to fund the installation of two bottle refilling stations in the University Recreation Center.

Jacob Greenstein, author of the bill, was the co-founder of the sustainability ad hoc committee. One of the elements of the committee is to look at ways Student Government Association can push forth student-led sustainability initiatives.

“They’re a great way to show that we care about the environment and make the campus look more modern,” Greenstein said.

TCU already has bottle refilling stations in Rees-Jones Hall, Beasley Hall and the Multipurpose facility.

“I take my water bottle everywhere,” Representative Erin Semple said. “I’ll specifically go out of my way to use the bottle filling stations in Rees-Jones and the BLUU 2.”

These refilling stations would be located in the weight room area and on the second floor near the walking machines.

Some House members posed questions about the benefit of refilling stations as opposed to traditional water fountains.

“A lot of these new machines have the ability to record how many bottles you’ve saved and out environmental impact,” Greenstein said. “It also makes the area more aesthetically appealing.”

Baylor University installed two bottle refilling stations on campus in 2012 and reports they were used more than 22,000 times.

House Representative Kelly Shara said it’s important to note that bottle refilling stations also cut down on the passage of germs in the rec center.

“I think the the most important part about bringing these in is they change social norms,” Greenstein said. “We have to show the student body how easy it is to be more sustainable.”
