TCU women’s basketball preview: Texas Tech

Following their hard-fought win over UCF on Tuesday evening, the TCU women’s basketball team (15-4, 2-6 Big 12) will make the 266-mile trip west to face Texas Tech (15-6, 4-4) on Saturday.

Playing without the injured Madison Conner, Jaden Owens, Sedona Prince and Daija Turner, the Frogs still managed to pull off the 66-60 win against UCF to get the season back on track. They’ll look to continue their winning ways against Texas Tech.

Texas Tech, currently in seventh place in the Big 12, is coming off a 66-48 home victory over Houston on Wednesday night. United Supermarkets Arena, the home of Texas Tech women’s basketball, has been friendly to the Red Raiders this year. Texas Tech is 12-1 in Lubbock this season, with the lone blemish being to No. 10 Texas on Jan. 3.

The Red Raiders offensive attack is run through guards Bailey Maupin and Jasmine Shavers.

Maupin, a sophomore out of Gruver, TX, has averaged 14.4 points per game. Part of the reason for her offensive success has been her sharp shooting from behind the three-point line; she’s a 33 percent three-point shooter this season.

Despite not starting two of the team’s 21 games, Shavers has put up 14.3 points per game for the Red Raiders. Like her backcourt teammate Maupin, Shavers is also a skilled shooter from three, shooting 32 percent.

For the Frogs, the availability of certain key players remains a question, specifically Conner. Conner, who before Tuesday night hadn’t been mentioned in any injury conversations regarding the team, was ruled out with a knee injury. There hasn’t been any word on whether she’ll be ready to go on Saturday.

Without Conner, sophomore Sydney Harris did a good job filling in as a three-point shooting option for the Frogs. She went three-for-eight from three against UCF on Tuesday. That type of offensive production will be important for TCU against Texas Tech, who themselves shoot lights out from three, especially at home.

In spite of their win over UCF, TCU fell to 37 in the NCAA NET rankings, down one spot from last week. A win over Texas Tech would not only help the Frogs climb in those rankings, but it would help add to their tournament resumé, which is in need of a big win. In ESPN’s latest Bracketology (a projection of who will make the NCAA Tournament bracket), the Frogs are not in the field, despite their top-40 NET ranking.

Tip-off is 2 p.m. CST on Saturday, Jan. 27 from United Supermarkets Arena in Lubbock. The game will stream on Big 12 Now on ESPN+.
