It’s almost time for that spooky October night, when ghouls, goblins and witches all become part of the fun. Parents will be seen trying to catch up to children, who are scrambling from house to house with excitement. This year, Halloween in the 109 carries on the tradition of family fun, offering various events and activities for local families and kids to celebrate the holiday.
This Friday, Oct. 28, math will be taking over the Halloween celebration at Alice Carlson Applied Learning Center. Alice Carlson’s Mathoween will take place from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the school starting with a costume parade and contest. This year, all costumes must be both homemade and related to math in some way. The Learning Center has provided a rubric to guide the costume creation. Additionally, there will be a scavenger hunt taking place for the families to take part in, based on Alice Carlson’s 20-year anniversary. Following Mathoween, families are invited to Trunk-or-Treat at University Baptist Church, where kids of all ages can trick-or-treat from decorated car trunks of church members.
For 109ers living in the Tanglewood neighborhood, Tanglewood Neighborhood Association’s 8th annual Halloween block party will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 29. The block party will be bustling with carnival games, socializing and trick-or-treating up and down the 3100 block of Chaparral Lane.
“Each year it has grown,” Beth Jenkins said. “The association piggy backed with us about five years ago to include the neighborhood. We had hot dogs and other things, it really got too big!” Tanglewood residents Beth and Judd Jenkins have planned the block party for years now.
For residents of University West, University West Neighborhood Association’s seventh annual Boyd Boo Bash will be held from noon to 6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 29, on the block of Boyd Avenue. Festivities will include bounce houses, face painting, hamburgers and hot dogs, roasted corn and popcorn, chili cook-off contest, Halloween costume contest, pumpkin decorating, pumpkin toss, bobbing for apples and pinatas.
On Sunday, Oct. 30, Arborlawn UMC’s first annual Pumpkin Patch event will be from 5 to 7 p.m. All families are welcome to join this fun and free event.
There will be hot dogs and drinks, lots of festive games, trunk or treat, a bounce house, face painting, and a lot of candy. Attendees are asked to dress up in a non-scary costume and please leave pets at home.
On the actual day of Halloween, Mon. Oct. 31, the Fort Worth Stockyards is teaming up with Radio Disney for a safe and family-friendly Halloween party. Treat Street will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. For free admission, families and kids in the 109 are invited to trick-or-treat at Stockyards Station shops, hop on free hayrides, and participate in a costume contest, pumpkin decorating, games, prizes and more.
University United Methodist Church’s Halloween carnival will be from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 31. Families and friends are welcome to join and enjoy games, contests and Halloween treats.
For those in the 109 who want to participate in the family fun tradition of Fort Worth Zoo’s 20th annual “Boo at the Zoo” event, this weekend, Oct. 28-30, is your last chance. The zoo will be featuring Halloween décor, events, games and candy, and the most unique feature of all: the zoo animals. Come out from noon to 5 p.m. to celebrate Halloween, children are welcome to come wearing their favorite costumes. Zookeepers have incorporated Boo-themed activities into all of the animal exhibits throughout the park so there is something fun to be expected around every corner. The main portion of the event, including trick-or-treating and the Wild Wonders animal shows, takes place at the Chesapeake Pavilions special event site. Tickets are $12 for adults, $9 for children ages 3-12, and $9 for seniors 65 and up, while toddlers 2 and under can get in for free.
