The Paschal Panthers will look to win their first game in two years against the Joshua Owls Thursday.

The Panthers haven’t won a game since Sept. 11, 2010, when they beat Azle, 15-12.

The Panthers will once again be without their starting quarterback, senior Alfredo Retana, head coach Matt Cook said. Retana suffered a shoulder injury in the final scrimmage of the preseason.

Junior Gibson Duwe will start in place of Retana, Cook said, but other quarterbacks, such as sophomore William Floyd, will play as well.

In last week’s game against Arlington Heights, Duwe completed 12 out of 20 passes for 154 yards with one touchdown and one interception. Floyd completed 4 out of 12 passes for 31 yards with two interceptions.

Cook said he was pleased with the passing game against Heights, but the Panthers threw the ball more than he wanted because the running game struggled.

Junior running back Justin Woodard ran for 18 yards on 13 carries, a 1.4 yard-per-carry average.

Cook said improving the running game starts with more consistent play from the offensive line. That offensive line will be without junior Austin Baxter, who suffered an arm injury against Heights, Cook said.

Defensively, the Panthers need to tackle better, he said.

The Owls come into Thursday’s game with a 1-1 record. That victory over South Hills on Aug. 31 broke a 30-game losing streak for Joshua.

The Owls lost their last game to Azle, 43-7.

Cook said Joshua starting quarterback Garrett Hoffman is a threat with his arm and his feet. Hoffman passed for 310 yards and ran for 177 yards in the Owls’ two games this season.

Cook said the Panthers will try to pressure Hoffman into making quick decisions.

The game between Paschal and Joshua will start at 7 p.m. on Thursday at Handley Field.
