Founder of the TCU Elite dance team, nursing major Megan McDonald, said she is pleased with the growth of Elite since it began in 2009.
This past summer McDonald said TCU Elite received a bid to Daytona for the National Dance Alliance’s national competition.
Victoria Ferraro, a sophomore nursing major and Elite member, said the team pays for camps and competitions by holding fundraising events throughout the year.
She said, “We usually send in videos to be reviewed to the camp for nationals due to lack of funds.”
This summer, Ferraro said the team raised enough funds to attend the NDA camp in Dallas for the first time.
She said despite not having enough team members and almost not enough funds, TCU Elite earned a bronze bid to nationals, where they will compete in April 10-14 of 2013.
“Our team was the smallest at the camp," Ferraro said. "We only had six girls, and you need eight.” She said the team currently has 16 members, and will have enough for nationals.
The judges made an exception for TCU Elite because they dedicated the time and money to be there and let them compete despite the circumstances, she said.
“We excelled in our classes and performances.” Ferraro said.
Courtney Flores, a senior psychology major and fourth year Elite dancer, said she is very happy with the talent on the team this year and is confident for nationals.
McDonald said this year they will also perform at a benefit for battered women in Hurst and attend both the American Dance/Drill Team National Dance Competition in March and the NDA Collegiate National Championship in April.
"We always want to put our name out in the community and promote not only TCU Elite Dance but also TCU," Flores said. "We are excited to be more involved with the community."
