In support of breast cancer awareness, the Iota Eta Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. is making their mark with an event titled “Real Men Wear Pink.”

“As a sorority (Delta Sigma Theta) we do a lot to inform students about health issues, but I personally know people that have breast cancer so these types of events mean a lot to me,” said Kenya Nelson, junior social work major and member of Delta Sigma Theta.

The women of Delta Sigma Theta are encouraging male students to submit a photo of themselves wearing pink attire with a one-sentence statement on why they support breast cancer.

“Every year we do something for women during breast cancer awareness month, but this time we wanted to put a fun and creative spin on the idea and get men involved,” said Tai Marion, nursing major and chair of the event.

Getting men involved in spreading breast cancer awareness has panned out to be a good idea creatively and informatively. 

“I feel the implementation of the words ‘Real Men’ in the title urged me to participate. Men should not be concerned with how masculine they look wearing pink, but with how breast cancer affect lives,” said Jonathan Dedmon, a junior criminal justice major.

The impact of breast cancer is not gender-exclusive. This year there is an estimated 12,190 cases of breast cancer among American men, according to Joy Donovan, communications manager of the American Cancer Society of Fort Worth.

The last day to submit a photo is Oct. 14. Photos should be emailed to [email protected].

The photos will be uploaded onto the TCU Delta Sigma Theta Facebook page and the voting will take place Oct. 15-20. The man with the most likes on the page will win a $50 Visa Giftcard.

They sorority has about 20 to 30 photos turned in so far and hope to get as many as possible by Oct. 14, Marion said.
