Swimmers and divers, former and new, come together each year to play games and challenge one another in the pool for the varsity alumni meet.

The meet will include a 200 medley relay race, challenges from alumni and head swimming and diving coach Richard Sybesma and two games of Animal Ball.

 Animal Ball resembles water polo but the swimmers use a beach ball, assistant swim coach Keegan Ingelido said.

Each team tries to get the ball to the other side of the pool, Ingelido said. The first game will pit the men athletes against the women athletes. The second game will feature alumni versus the athletes.

Senior Katie Scarsella said the game ends up being just the men in the water with the women outside of the water making sure the ball does not go out.

“[Animal Ball] gets pretty rough at the end,” Ingelido said.

The challenge races alumni and athletes participate in are just for fun, Ingelido said. Alumni challenge the athletes, and sometimes Sybesma will put together a challenge for an athlete and alumni.

The alumni that will come to the meet range from fifth year athletes to older swimmers, Ingledio said. Last year, between 40 and 50 alumni showed up.

“There’s an older man that comes and does all the cheers and is very into [the meet],” Scarsella said. “He challenges the swimmers and does the relay with them.”

A sibling rivalry will happen at the meet. Colorado native Jennifer Oster graduated from TCU and plans to challenge her sister Lizzy, Scarsella said.

This meet is fun and the alumni and swimmers will enjoy it, Ingelido said. She said she enjoys how everyone comes together and forms relationships.

The fifth annual varsity alumni meet will be on Oct. 20 in the TCU Rec Center Natatorium. The meet will start at 10 a.m.
