Delta Gamma sorority won Phi Kappa Sigma fraternity’s annual Phi Kap Phield Day this past Sunday night.

The Phi Kap tradition took place on the grassy knoll of Worth Hills in front of the Delta Gamma and Kappa Alpha Theta sorority houses from 4 to 6:15 p.m.

The field day helped to support Phi Kap’s philanthropy — the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

Eleven out of the 12 Panhellenic sororities participated.

The field day events consisted of the following: tug of war, sack races, water balloon toss, egg and spoon race, hula hoop contest, three-legged race and “finest coach." During the finest coach contest, sorority women dress their Phi Kap coaches up in costumes for a fashion show.

Ariana Montelongo, a freshman Delta Gamma, said she loved philanthropy events because she got to bond with her sorority sisters while supporting their cause.  Her favorite part of Phi Kap Phield Day was dressing up her coach as Lady Gaga, she said. 

Chris Cochran, sophomore philanthropy chair for Phi Kap, said during the previous week and upcoming weeks, Phi Kap holds events at restaurants around campus. The restaurants donate 10 percent of all net profits to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

One such event took place at Raising Cane’s on University on Oct. 24.  Yo!, a frozen yogurt shop near campus will hold an event on Oct. 30.  McAlister’s Deli will also participate on Nov. 6., from 5 to 10 p.m. 

Cochran also said the penny jars that were set up in front of the library and the east end of the BLUU this past week.

The new members of Phi Kap and Cochran helped collect pennies, silver coins and all types of dollar bills.

The penny jars collected $534 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, Cochran said.

Kyle Strauss, sophomore Phi Kap member and Biology major, matched the amount that Delta Gamma collected over the past week, Cochran said.

“I decided to match DG’s donations because I was hoping that it would give the sororities more incentive to donate to our philanthropy," Strauss said. "I picked DG because I am one of their coaches for Phield Day and I’ve got a lot of good friends in DG that I knew would try and help get donations.”

Strauss also said he loves this philanthropy and always tries to find a way to help because he has been blessed in so many ways, and wants to give back and get others to be more involved.
