Senior Kelsey Sundaram of the women's tennis team will play in her last fall season tournament Friday at the Cougar Fall Open in Houston.
This tournament will be Sundaram's second chance to compete this fall after undergoing wrist surgery in June.
“I feel like my injury might have been a blessing in disguise, because I feel great and I'm striking the ball much better,” Sundaram said.
This tournament will be the first one of the season for Federica Denti, senior, after recovering from a broken arm injury earlier this semester.
Four women will be competing in the Cougar Fall Open: Paulina Blanc, Federica Denti, Kelsey Sundaram and Megan Ziots.
Sundaram said she looks forward to having back Denti, her doubles partner.
Assistant Coach Jason Marshall said the team is focused on the spring season, and this tournament is another form of practice for the women.
“We want to get some match practice in for the players that need it before the fall season ends,” Marshall said.
Sundaram said she is excited to be able to play any match that she can.
“I think it will be mentally and physically tough for all of us, every single one of us is in need of match practice,” Sundaram said.
Marshall said after this last tournament the team will focus on the spring season.
“We are going to be stepping [up] our strength conditioning as well as individual practice,” Marshall said.
Based on how the women competed in the fall, Marshall said he believes they will do well in the spring.
“I think we are one of a few teams who have a chance to win the Big 12 title,” Marshall said.
