TCU football head coach Gary Patterson is a top contender for the head coaching job at the University of Arkansas, according to Arkansas based news station 5NEWS.com.

Bo Mattingly, a 5NEWS content partner, said Patterson is the “leading candidate” for the job after talking with multiple sources.

“It is not a done deal, but I’ve heard from multiple sources that make me believe Gary Patterson is likely to be the next coach,” Mattingly said in a story on 5NEWS.com.

Arkansas is looking to replace interim coach John L. Smith. Smith took over in the spring on a 10-month contract after Bobby Petrino was fired. Petrino was fired after he hired his mistress to work on his staff.

Patterson, the winningest coach in TCU history, has been on the Horned Frog coaching staff since 1998 and took over as head coach in 2000. He earned the National Coach of the Year award in 2010, the same year TCU defeated Wisconsin 21-19 in the Rose Bowl.

Patterson won 10 or more games in a season eight times in his career and five conference championships. He signed a two-year contract extension in January that is good through 2018.

The Frogs moved to the Big 12 this year where they are 6-3 overall.

Mattingly said Texas Tech’s Tommy Tuberville and Oklahoma State’s Mike Gundy are also on the candidate list.
