At its last meeting of the semester, Student Government Association passed a resolution encouraging more professors to use eCollege for their classes.

The resolution was in response to student perception that professors do not use eCollege enough, especially in reporting grades, said Jillian Voigt, the AddRan College of Liberal Arts representative who introduced the resolution.

According to the Improve TCU survey conducted by the House’s Student Experience Committee, 28 percent of students surveyed said their professors did not use eCollege enough.

Several representatives raised concerns over professor sovereignty in the classroom.

“This is a professor’s class – we have no business telling them how to conduct their class,” said Addison White, Class of 2013 representative.

Despite opposition, the resolution passed by a vote of 28-7, with two abstentions.

In addition to passing the resolution over eCollege use, the House tabled a resolution about reaching out to hospitalized and recovering students.

Last week, the House passed a bill to send a letter to Amberle Durano, a senior nursing major who was hospitalized with a serious disease this semester.

At the time, several representatives expressed concern about creating a double standard by not reaching out to all students going through diseases or illnesses.

Student Body President Brent Folan, who had voiced similar reservations during last week’s meeting, vetoed the legislation last week.

Michael Dabbs, parliamentarian for the House of Representatives, said at Tuesday’s meeting that Folan did not follow correct Student Body Code procedure when filing the veto. Dabbs was among those who introduced the resolution that was vetoed.

A new resolution was discussed on Tuesday that would have replaced the previous resolution. The legislation proposed the creation of a letter-writing program to reach out to sick and hospitalized students who had at some point been part of SGA.

The resolution would have placed the program under the Vice President for External Affairs.

After brief debate over the resolution, the House unanimously agreed to table the legislation until next semester.

Tuesday’s meeting also marked the last SGA meeting led by Student Body President Brent Folan and Treasurer David Belpedio. Both student body officers lost re-election in November.

The 99th session of the House of Student Representatives will resume in the spring semester.
