Frogs ready for Iron Skillet showdown

Coming off a big win over the Oklahoma Sooners, the Horned Frog football team looks to add another victory when it plays long time rival SMU for the Iron Skillet on Saturday.TCU has won the past six games played between the two teams by an average of 27 points. That includes the 44-0 blowout in 2004, the biggest loss for SMU head football coach Phil Bennett last season.

Despite TCU’s winning streak, head football coach Gary Patterson said he prepares for this game as hard as he does any other game on the schedule.

“I don’t judge people by wins and losses,” Patterson said. “I judge on improvement, and we have our hands full.”

Junior wide receiver Quentily Harmon said TCU cannot overlook SMU.

“We gained a lot by beating Oklahoma, but that all changes if we lose to SMU,” Harmon said. “We’ve got to be ready to play.”

SMU is coming off a 28-23 loss to Baylor. Mustang quarterbacks Tony Eckert and Jerad Romo went a combined 9-26 with one touchdown. Romo made his impact on the ground, rushing for 82 yards and one touchdown.

Patterson took notice of both players and said he expects them to be rotated during the game.

“Both of them are good at what they do,” Patterson said.

Patterson and the Frogs said they are refusing to look at this game as any more or any less than it really is.

“It’s the next ball game,” Patterson said. “We like to take things one game at a time.”

Bennett said he took notice of TCU’s game against OU and realizes his team has a lot of work to do.

“TCU was the better football team against Oklahoma that day,” Bennett said. “They were near dominant, and we realize we will have to step our game up to compete with TCU.”

Patterson said the Frogs will be ready for any and everything when the teams play.

“SMU has nothing to lose and everything to gain,” Patterson said. “They’ll be pulling out all the stops. You name it, you’ll see it.”

The Frogs’ key players remained healthy after the season opener. Patterson said the scare senior quarterback Tye Gunn gave TCU fans when he went down against OU is nothing to worry about this week.

“When he went down, I came over on the field, and he was just smiling,” Patterson said. “He’s been there before.”

Patterson said his core of linebackers – David Hawthorne, Jason Phillips, Robert Henson and Ryan Schlenger – must maintain the dominance it displayed against OU.

“Those are the four that played the most and held one of the best running backs in the country to 63 yards,” Patterson said. “Now, they can’t be one-game wonders.”

The Frogs will be ready to go all out Saturday against the Mustangs, Patterson said.

“They’re a cross town rival,” Patterson said. “If you can’t get up for this one, you can’t get up for any of them.
