The women’s golf team looks to next week’s tournament to bounce back from placing eighth out of 12 last week.The Frogs are heading to Albuquerque, N.M., for the Dick McGuire Invitational.

At the end of the first qualifying round Wednesday, which determined which golfers TCU will send to the tournament, head coach Angie Ravaioli-Larkin said there is still work to do.

“We need to play well, put (last week) behind us and move forward,” she said.

Sophomore Carrie Morris and junior Camille Blackerby have secured two of the five spots on the qualifying team.

“(Morris and Blackerby) are playing one and two,” Ravaioli-Larkin said.

The members of the team motivate each other as well as themselves, she said.

The team huddles before tournaments, then Ravaioli-Larkin gives them a motivational speech, she said. The team will then get into another huddle and proceed to warm up.

“The girls pushing themselves and each other makes the play more competitive,” Ravaioli-Larkin said.

She said if the Frogs plays its game, they will have no problem coming home victorious.

“This is a great tournament for us to start with against the Mountain West teams,” Ravaioli-Larkin said.

Morris is confident in the team’s ability to excel on a familiar course.

“We have players that have played this course,” Morris said. “I think we can go out and win the tournament as a team.”

Blackerby shares her sentiment.

“Everyone is shooting low,” Blackerby said. “I expect to win.”

Blackerby said the players are comfortable with the course because it is a course they play every year.

Ravaioli-Larkin said she is excited to have the team get out there and play with host New Mexico.

“New Mexico has a good program,” Ravaioli-Larkin said. “I’m excited to see how we’ll do against them.”

She said the TCU women’s golf program has had a couple good finishes in this tournament.

Morris will settle for nothing but the best.

“Last year we finished seventh,” she said. “This year we can win.”

The McGuire Invitational features three days of play for the top five qualifying players from each team. The tournament is set for Monday to Wednesday.
