The Horned Frog women’s tennis team went to Denton to play at the North Texas invitational over the weekend.TCU’s walk-ons competed in the tournament. Sophomore Melissa Ber‚ won a consolation title with two victories in the singles tournament.

She defeated her opponent Austin Mills 1-6, 6-1, 10-7 prior to her straight sweep of Marissa Brown 6-2, 6-4.

Ber‚ was not the only player to snatch a victory as sophomore Lindsay McBride got her first win this season over her opponent Deanna Carrillo, 6-1, 6-0.

In the doubles tournament, junior Gabby Lopez and McBride lost 8-5.

Head coach Dave Borelli got a closer look at the walk-ons that had not received a lot of playing time and said he was impressed with the way they played.

“The kids played real well, and it is clear we have a deep team full of talent,” Borelli said. “We are really happy we got to see the kids play.”

Lopez, sister to senior captain Gloriann Lopez, thought the weekend was an adventurous start to the walk-on’s season.

“It was tough, hot and long.” Lopez said. “We had a lot of matches, it was good practice though to get matches in.

“It is kind of amazing, we have five walk-ons that put forth 100 percent, since they’re walk-ons, they really don’t have to do this, however, they do anyway.” Lopez said. “Lindsay and Melissa were good leaders at the tournament, even though they didn’t win a lot of matches that they should have. They really had tough matches, and they really put in all their effort. We played full teams from SMU, Texas State and Texas Tech.”

Personally, Lopez said, she was impressed with how she played.

“I feel I did really well actually, considering I don’t play that often.” Lopez said.

Lopez thought the level of playing was good competition for the walk-ons.

“The level of playing was, well – I don’t really want to say underneath the scholarship players playing level, even though they would have had an easy time winning – so the coach took the walk-ons instead,” Lopez said.

Lopez thinks players and fans will have a lot to look forward to this season.

“Even our walk-ons represent how our team will play,” Lopez said. “Everyone on the team gives 110 percent and we have so much talent even in the walk-ons and we will go so far.”

Ber‚ said she also thought it was good practice and loved playing tennis again.

“The tournament went well, and I am happy with how we did, since a lot of time has passed since we last played.” Ber‚ said. “We did pretty well, even though not all of us were healthy.”

The Frogs will continue their season Friday in Berkeley, Calif. at the Cal-Nike Invitational.
