The Horned Frogs beat Air Force 2-1 on Friday to snap a four-game losing streak and claim their first ever victory in the Mountain West Conference.Sophomore forward Bjarnveig Birgisdottir scored the first goal for TCU in the 12th minute of play, while junior goalie Katy Buchanan corralled four saves with only one goal allowed.
Sophomore midfielder Lesley Parkinson scored the game-winner for her first career goal at the school.
Parkinson, who is a Colorado native, said the win was a nice turn of events for the team after its recent struggles.
“It felt really good,” Parkinson said. “We came out and played real well with good teamwork, and it was a good confidence booster for us.”
Alison Wood scored the only goal for the Falcons, while Jennifer Drew collected five saves and allowed two goals in their losing effort.
Sunday was a different story for the Frogs, as they dropped a game against Wyoming, 2-0.
Head coach Dan Abdalla said that the team still needs to work on its focus after the two games last weekend.
“It was good to get that first conference win, but we gave one away as well,” Abdalla said. “We need to do a better job coming in and realize that there are two games instead of just one and that we need to win them both.”
Junior midfielder Kim Thompson led the offensive charge against Wyoming with two shots that drifted wide of the goal, while Buchanan allowed three goals and picked up three saves in the losing effort.
For Wyoming, forward Mercy Adetoye scored the only two goals of the game and goalie Ashley Sheppard picked up two saves to lead the Cowgirls’ charge.
The Horned Frogs play their final game of the regular season Saturday night at New Mexico with hopes of building some momentum before tournament play begins in two weeks.
Thompson said she likes their chances against the Lobos this weekend.
“We really don’t have anything to lose,” Thompson said. “We determine our own destiny, so our status for the tournament really depends on how we come out and play. We just have to go there and give it everything we’ve got.”
Abdalla said the team just needs to get their focus back to start playing well again.
“We’ve had an up and down season,” Abdalla said. “We just need to regain our focus and get back on track with what we’ve had going. New Mexico is a good match for us so we just need to go out, get another conference game beneath us, and more experience before tournament play starts up because anything can happen once we get into the tournament.
