The No. 21 TCU men’s golf team heads to Georgia this weekend to play at one of this fall’s most prestigious tournaments, the head coach said.The Carpet Capital Collegiate in Rocky Face, Ga., will feature 18 teams, 13 of which are ranked in the NCAA’s top 20, head coach Bill Montigel said.

The team will face tough competition against No. 6 Florida, No. 2 Georgia Tech and No. 1 Georgia, which won the NCAA in 2004, Montigel said.

Drew Laning, Jon McLean, Franklin Corpening, Jesse Speirs and Robby Ormand will tee off for TCU this weekend.

Laning, a senior, said the course is difficult and the competition fierce, but he’s looking forward to the tournament.

“We definitely have to play our best to win,” Laning said.

Montigel said the course is in great shape and is one players can score well on.

He said his team is capable of shooting the eight under par that he said is necessary to win.

James Sacheck, a sophomore, said the team has been playing a tough schedule and should do well.

“One week we play well, other weeks we’re OK, so it all kind of balances out,” Sacheck said.

The only downfall for the team this year is its youth, Montigel said. Most of the players are freshmen and sophomores, and Laning is the only player who has played this weekend’s course.

Corpening, a sophomore, said the team is good this year and its consistency could pay off.

Sacheck will not play the tournament but said his goal is the same as the team’s: to win the tournament and to win the NCAA championship.

“We’ll have to come together all at the right time,” he said.
