The TCU volleyball team was defeated in its last two home matches of the season against San Diego State and Nevada-Las Vegas on Friday and Saturday at the University Recreation Center.Head coach Prentice Lewis said the team had four players suspended Friday for breaking team rules but refused to comment on the reason for the suspension.

Lewis said the team used younger players and the freshmen played hard.

Sophomore LeMeita Smith and freshman Nirelle Hampton recorded many kills early against San Diego State.

Senior Sky Tacker said some younger players stepped up in the absence of some of the team’s leaders.

“We had girls playing out there having fun and playing with their heart,” Tacker said.

Freshman Pamela Gehrke and Tacker got eight digs each, but the Frogs lost 19-30, 26-30, 27-30.

On Saturday, the Frogs outlasted the Rebels 31-29 in the first game but lost the next three 19-30, 24-30, 15-30.

Sophomore Talaya Whitfield said the team’s enthusiasm and energy were like a roller coaster fluctuating throughout the game.

“I think we did well, but we could step it up for the next matches,” Whitfield said.

Freshman Gabi McHugh said the team could improve on passing and needs to take care of its side of the court.

“It’s all about us and how we play,” McHugh said.

Lewis said the Frogs have been struggling throughout the season but every day the team is trying to improve and work together.

The Frogs will finish their road games at Colorado State today and Wyoming on Wednesday.
