TCU will take a trip to Cancun, Mexico over Thanksgiving Break, but the trip won’t be a holiday for the Lady Frogs. They will open play against Mississippi State on Friday in the Caribbean Classic.
Sophomore guard Adrianne Ross said the team knows little about Mississippi State.
“They’re in the (Southeastern Conference), and we know we have to give a lot of credit to that conference,” Ross said. “We know they will have good guard play, but besides that, we don’t know very much yet.”
Head women’s coach Jeff Mittie said the team can do nothing but improve after its showing against Georgia on Monday, a 80-51 loss.
“We obviously have a lot to work on, but every game is a different one to me,” Mittie said. “We’ll work hard in practice and be ready for Mississippi State.”
Sophomore guard Natasha Lacy said: “We just have to move on from this (Georgia) game. It’s over with.”
The Frogs will take on North Carolina in their second and final game of the tournament. Much like Georgia’s guard game, the Frogs can expect quick play from preseason Wooden Award candidate junior guard Ivory Latta.
“They have a great guard in Latta,” Ross said. “They’ll be tough to defend, but it shouldn’t be a problem because our team will have the answers to their guard play.”
The Frogs were held to 33-percent shooting against Georgia, which plays a zone defense. Sophomore guard Moneka Knight said zone offense is one thing the team will continue to work on in practice this week.
“We have to rotate faster against the zone defense,” Knight said. “We have to work on our shooting and our talking, too. It’s all just the same things we’ve been working on really.”
Ross said she expects the team to come out fighting after the loss to Georgia.
“No one likes to lose and especially by 30 points,” Ross said. “We were confident going into the Georgia game. We just have to control the momentum and the tempo this weekend.”
Ross said the trip to Cancun will be a welcome one for the Lady Frogs.
“Getting away from here will be good for us,” Ross said. “We haven’t traveled yet this year. Getting us all together and bonding in the airport and hotel will only bring us closer together on the court.”
