Rodgers officially announces plans to leave school for NFL

Junior wide receiver Cory Rodgers will be forgoing his senior season at TCU and entering the NFL Draft after changing his mind several times in the past two weeks.Rodgers originally told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram on Jan. 10 that he was leaving school for the NFL. On Jan. 17, teammate Eric Buchanan said Rodgers had reconsidered and had already re-enrolled in classes for the Spring 2006 semester. Other team officials were unable to confirm the matter, and Rodgers’ most recent decision came later the next day.

Athletics Director Danny Morrison said in a media statement Monday that Rodgers has confirmed his plan to move to the professional level.

“Cory has officially informed us that he has declared for the NFL Draft,” the statement read. “We certainly wish him the very best.”

Rodgers could not be reached for comment.

Head coach Gary Patterson told Skiff reporters earlier in the month that the coaching staff supports Rodgers and his final decision.

“Obviously we hate to lose Cory, but we also know he needs to do the right things for himself,” Patterson said. “You have to let them make their own decisions. When they make their decision, what you have to do is help them become the best they can be.”
