The Horned Frogs could not find any offense Saturday afternoon in their game against the University of Central Florida. The Frogs dropped the contest with a score of 5-1 to even the series 1-1.TCU (12-13) would allow the first run from UCF (15-11) to score on a wild pitch from junior pitcher Brad Furnish. Furnish had four walks and seven strikeouts in five innings.

The defense stepped up for TCU as senior center fielder Ryan Pack threw out base runner Kiko Vazquez at home plate in the top of the fourth inning.

The Frogs further retaliated after a stolen base by sophomore third basemen Matt Carpenter in the bottom of the fourth inning. Senior left fielder Jerid Buttell then blasted a double to drive in Carpenter for the only run scored for the Frogs.

UCF took the lead in the fifth inning after two runs were driven in with hits from junior Matt Ray and sophomore Tyson Auer.

TCU head coach Jim Schlossnagle said the Frogs were trying to do a better job swinging the bat to get off to a good start.

“We did a real poor job of that early, which kind of set the tone for the rest of the game,” he said.

Credit is due to the opposing team’s pitching staff – opponents are only hitting .236 off of the Golden Knights.

Buttell said TCU did not execute at the plate, which ultimately cost them the game.

“If they make bad pitches, we need to hit them,” Buttell said. “Bottom line.”

The Frogs will finish the home series tomorrow afternoon in the final game against the Knights.

Schlossnagle said the Frogs have to swing the bat better to put more pressure on the defense to be successful.

“The focus for tomorrow’s game is to try and score first, get a lead and keep it,” he said.

The final game of the series with UCF is set for 1 p.m. Sunday at Lupton Stadium.
