Volleyball teams record win streak ended in loss to Ole Miss

The Horned Frogs Volleyball team set a new record and ended its five-match winning streak after a defeat by the Ole Miss Rebels in the Nike/LaQuinta Invitational Saturday. After the Frogs beat Centenary in three games at the University Recreation Center, they held the record for the best start in school history at 10-1. The previous record was 9-1.

An hour and a half later it took Ole Miss five games to take the Frogs down. The scores were: 30-26, 31-33, 28-30, 30-26, 9-15.

The Frogs need to focus on maintaining consistency, said Prentice Lewis, the head coach.

“When you don’t put a game from one to 30 together, it’s real difficult to win,” Lewis said. “We did not do that at all today.”

The games they won they played hard for, but the other team had many errors, Lewis said. They did specific things well, but did not do them consistently.

Senior Calli Corley had 15 digs in the match against Ole Miss Saturday afternoon and 22 digs against Centenary.

“I think we showed what we can do, but at times we took mental breaks,” said Corley.

Senior Anna Vaughn, stood out against both Centenary and Ole Miss. In the first game she led the Frogs in kills with 12 against Centenary and 18 against Ole Miss.

“We can take some stuff from this,” said Vaughn. “Use it as a motivator, something to make us work harder in practice.”

The Frogs kept after Ole Miss and didn’t stop fighting back, said Vaughn.

“They went out and played hard,” Lewis said. “Our team goes hard every time.”

To prepare for the next game they need to work on the little things during practice, said Corley.

“When you’re winning it’s easier to get relaxed,” said Vaughn. “When you lose a game like that it burns a little more, makes you want to work harder.”

The Frog’s next game is 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 13, at the University Recreation Center against Texas State.
