The Lady Frogs topped the San Diego State Aztecs Sunday afternoon 83-57 to bring their record to an overall 15-6 and 5-2 in the Mountain West Conference.TCU extended its home winning streak to 17 games (12 this season), but started off slow in the first half of a physical game

The Lady Frogs had trouble converting shots into points, with a 33 field goal conversion percentage in the first half. Junior guard Adrienne Ross was limited to eight points before an audience of more than 2,000.

Head coach Jeff Mittie said the team’s momentum in the first half was spoiled by the constant calling of fouls.

“It was an ugly basketball game with ugly fouls called,” Mittie said. “The first half lacked any flow.”

Just before the end of the first half, one of San Diego’s lead scorers, forward Shanna Demus, was injured in a scramble for the ball and had to leave the court in a neck brace.

That seemed to stop momentum for the Aztecs, as the Frogs turned up the head in an exciting second half with Ross and junior guard Helen Roden leading the team in fast break opportunities.

TCU dominated breakaway points in the second half, with a game total of 24 fast break points compared to San Diego’s two.

They also led rebounds and turnovers, converting them into 34 game points.

“Rebounding people leads to fast break opportunities,” Mittie said.

Other notable performances came from senior forward Ashley Davis, who scored her 40th straight game with at least one three-pointer. Her record is second in the nation to Jackie Closser from Butler University.

Davis also led the team with 10 game points.

Ross, the high scorer of the game with 18 total points, said the team got its head in the game the second half.

“We finally got into the zone by getting fast break points,” Ross said. “That’s the kind of basketball we like to play.”

Ross said she remembered San Diego State playing a physical game last time the two teams met in 2006.

“Anytime you play a team like SDSU, it challenges you as a player,” Ross said. “But we held our own in the second half.”

Despite the physical game, Mittie said he was pleased with the improvement in his defense of not drawing as many fouls.

However, he said the team needs to work on executing the ball better with their next game against BYU.

“We’ve got a big week ahead of us,” Mittie said.

The Lady Frogs’ next game is Thursday in Provo, Utah, against Brigham Young University (15-5 and 6-1 in conference).
