Some midday showers must have put a damper on the Horned Frogs bats as the 34-11 baseball team was held to just two hits, Tuesday night.

Credit indeed goes to the Baylor Bears starter Wade Mackey who threw a complete game for the first time in his college career. Mackey’s nine inning shutout was keyed by his command of three pitches that he kept away from the hot TCU bats which were averaging more than seven runs a game during the last week of play.

“We didn’t have any good swings all night,” head coach Jim Schlossnagle said. “He was good, really good.”

However the lack of Horned Frogs offense is not of concern to the coach or his players as the No. 23 team still leads the Mountain West Conference and is still in the process of hitching a ride on the road to Omaha.

“It’s just a bump in the road for us,” third baseman Steven Trout said, reitterating the words from his head coach. Trout had one of the more productive nights at the plate reaching base twice by getting hit by pitches from Mackey.

“We couldn’t lay off his slider,” Trout said. “And then he would work pitches up and away.”

The wind was blowing in at Lupton Stadium and perhaps that kept some deep fly balls from TCU power threats Andrew Walker and Austin Adams in the yard, however the final score still showed the Horned Frogs offense was lacking. Both hits were collected by designated hitter Hunt Woodruff.

“In a 56 game season, you are going to get pitched to,” Schlossnagle said.

The offense needed for the Bears victory came during the early innings when Baylor scraped together three runs off singles in the top of the second inning against TCU starter Chase Perry. Duirng Perry’s 1 2/3 innings of work, Baylor managed to slap five singles and send ten batters to the plate. That was all the work needed for Mackey and his 116 pitches to mow down the Horned Frogs. TCU was not able to advance a runner past second base after the first inning.

The fans were able to see one of the fastest games played at TCU this season when the final out was recorded, the game clock was at 2 hours and 40 minutes.

“When we lose, we get out of here fast,” Schlossnagle said. The last time the Horned Frogs lost at home was a 5-0 shutout at the hands of the BYU Cougars on April 19.
