Green quarterback to take snaps

The battle to decide who would fill the vacant starting quarterback position has ended as head coach Gary Patterson named Andy Dalton as the starting quarterback this season.Patterson named the redshirt freshman the starter on Sunday, and will be under center when the Frogs open up the season at home in two weeks against Baylor on Sept. 1. Dalton, who has yet to take an official in-game snap in his college career, beat out sophomore Marcus Jackson for the position.

Jackson, who was the backup to Jeff Ballard last season, is remembered for his opening-day performance last year as he helped lead the Frogs’ 17-7 win against Baylor after Ballard was sidelined with a migraine.

Dalton’s pedigree has been well-publicized since his arrival to TCU last year, and Patterson called him “a student of the game” in an article in Monday’s Fort Worth Star-Telegram. His stellar high school career, which included being named as the Houston Chronicle’s Greater Houston Area Offensive Player of the Year in 2005, ended with his Katy High School squad losing to national power Southlake Carroll in the 2005 Class 5A Division II state title game.
