White reverse fortunes, tie series at 1-1

White reverse fortunes, tie series at 1-1

The White team bounced back Saturday to take the second game of the Purple-White World Series, 7-0, against the White team and evened the series at one game apiece.Freshman right-hander Greg Holle led the way for the White team, pitching 4 2/3 innings and allowing just two hits in the shutout victory. Holle struck out four in the win.

Holle said he knew he needed to take advantage of the opportunity for a Series start.

“I was given the opportunity to get a start here this early in the fall, and it was pretty big,” Holle said. “I thought I sort of capitalized. I made them put the ball in play and got some strikeouts at some big times.”

Head coach Jim Schlossnagle said all the pitchers threw well, but Purple starter junior Derek VerHagen especially impressed him. The left-handed VerHagen finished with four innings, two earned runs and seven strikeouts. He said he also liked the performances of junior left hander Gabe Sandersius and senior righty Colin Auten.

“VerHagen, that’s the best he’s pitched this fall,” Schlossnagle said.

After three scoreless innings, left fielder Chris Ellington jump started the White team’s offense with a two-run homer.

The score stayed 2-0 until the sixth when senior right fielder Matt McGuirk singled to lead off the inning. Ellington would then reach on a fielder’s choice. With one out, Jimmie Pharr singled, driving in a run. Center fielder Eric Givens followed with another single, scoring Ellington. Senior third baseman Matt Carpenter capped the inning off with a double to plate the final two runs. The White added its last run in the eighth.

Multi-run innings won the game for each side. The Purple team scored five in the eighth Friday, and the White team brought four across the plate in the sixth Saturday.

McGuirk said the teams worked together best in those innings.

“We’ll start doing well and pick up and little momentum by getting some back-to-back hits,” McGuirk said. “Big innings win the game every game.”

The final three games of the Series will be Friday through Sunday, October 28.
