Tired of tapes not being rewound, or have you forgotten about VHS through the introduction of DVD? And now, Blue-Ray? Rewind has become a thing of the past, but not for Jack Black and Mos Def.

Michel Gondry, director of “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind,” has a new film called “Be Kind Rewind.” It is a quirky and unusual take on the make-your-own film era. From the lowly streets of Passaic, N.J., we are introduced to Mr. Fletcher’s (Danny Glover) failing “Be Kind Rewind” VHS store.

When Jerry (Black) accidentally magnetizes his brain, he erases all of the tapes in this financially dead establishment, causing him and Mike (Def) to take some rash actions. With Miss Falewicz (Mia Farrow) pressing them for “Ghostbusters,” Mike and Jerry decide to film their own version. This is where Gondry’s specialties resurface.

The dynamic duo begin production on what proves to be a masterpiece. However, when Miss Falewicz’s nephew and his friends return to the corner store, the duo begins to panic. In the end, these films prove to be a huge success and in high demand. They realize the only way to save the struggling video store is to produce large amounts of these ‘blockbuster hopefuls.’ After showing early potential, the Feds jump in and destroy this copyright-infringed material.

Though Jack Black brings his normal comedic standard to this film, he is completely surrounded by sub-par actors. The movie-making montages capture the audience by being delightfully inventive, but to some, this film may be lacking in that ultimate emotional pull. All together, this film is perfect for that occasional date, weekly hang out, or simply a night out.
