Briefs: Horned Frogs experience victorious weekend

It was an all-around successful weekend for TCU athletics. The football team remained undefeated with a 67-7 victory over Stephen F. Austin. The volleyball team improved its record to 6-0 by winning its second straight tournament, this time in Edinburg. The soccer team hasn’t lost yet this year either as it is now 4-0-1 with two shutouts in Arizona. The women’s cross country team took the top spot at the North Texas Invitational, while the men finished fourth.

The volleyball team swept Prairie View A&M and Texas-Pan American to remain undefeated at 6-0 and out to its best start in school history. The team has lost just one set during its six matches so far.

The UTPA tri-match tournament in Edinburg started against the Prairie View A&M Panthers for TCU.

The first set was close until freshman middle blocker Hannah Fort started a 9-0 Horned Frog run, and the set ended with a 25-15 win. The next two sets were closer, but TCU was able to hang on and win them both 25-18 and 25-19.

The second match of the tournament was against the UT-Pan American Lady Broncs. Once again, the Horned Frogs dominated the first set, winning 25-12, followed that with a 25-15 second-set victory and squeaked by 25-21 to finish in straight sets.

Sophomore outside hitter Irene Hester was named MVP of the tournament with 29 kills and 10 digs over the two matches.

The soccer team continued its winning ways this season by winning both games in Arizona over the weekend to improve to 4-0-1.

Against Arizona State in Tempe, Ariz., freshman forward Jordan Calhoun scored the lone goal of the game as the Horned Frogs won 1-0. The goal was Calhoun’s sixth of the season, which leads the Mountain West Conference. Calhoun was Mountain West Conference Player of the Week last week, and she was also named to Soccer Buzz’s Elite team for her efforts in her first week of college soccer.

Sophomore goalkeeper Kelsey Walters made five saves and helped the Frogs win despite being outshot 16-6.

Walters helped TCU win its second game of the weekend, a 1-0 win against Northern Arizona, by stopping all four shots on goal from the Lumberjacks. The shutout was Walter’s fourth of the season.

Senior defender Caroline Starns scored the lone goal of this match in the 64th minute.

Cross Country

The women’s cross country team finished first in the 2-mile race at the North Texas Invitational, while the men’s cross country team finished fourth of the four teams present in the 8K.
