Official: Recalled crackers isolated occurrence

Editor’s note: This story was revised for accuracy at 7 p.m. Friday.

The peanut butter sandwich crackers removed from Bistro Burnett on Wednesday morning were the only products on campus that needed to be taken off the shelves, a university Dining Services official said.

Kellogg Co. recalled its Austin brand peanut butter sandwich crackers on Jan. 16 as a precautionary measure before the Food and Drug Administration found salmonella in one of the packages, according to a Kellogg press release.

Ev Barnes, operations director for Dining Services, said the crackers found in Bistro Burnett were an isolated occurrence.

“Everything else that has anything to do with peanuts has been removed,” Barnes said.

Rick Flores, general manager for Dining Services, declined to comment.

According to an FDA press release, Peanut Corporation of America is at the source of the recent salmonella outbreak.

Barnes said Dining Services is working on confirming that everything sold on campus is not affiliated with Peanut Corporation of America.

Monica Zimmer, director of public relations for Sodexo Inc., the food service provider for the university, wrote in an e-mail Wednesday that the crackers for sale at Bistro Burnett were stocked by mistake.

“Due to a human error, a product on the recall list was mistakenly stocked at Texas Christian University,” Zimmer wrote Wednesday.
