San Diego State star pitcher leaves in top of eighth inning

San Diego State’s No. 1 draft pick prospect Stephen Strasburg left the Aztec’s second Mountain West Championships game in the bottom of the eighth inning with tightness in his right back and side area.

Strasburg had held the New Mexico Lobo’s scoreless through 8 when he was lifted. The Aztecs went on to win the game 2-1 despite the Lobo’s scoring a run and loading the bases in the bottom of the ninth.

Aztec manager Tony Gwynn didn’t seem too concerned by Strasburg’s injury after the game.

“He’s fine,” Gwynn said. “Just a little tightness in his back. We put some ice on him when he got out of the game and he’s looking better already. Hopefully if we need him again he’ll be fine.”

The Aztecs will face the winner of the TCU-Utah game tonight at 7 p.m. Gwynn said it does not matter who the Aztecs face in their next game.

“We’ll just keep winning and keep advancing,” Gwynn said.
