The women’s soccer team will look to even its Mountain West Conference record against Air Force today after losing their first conference game to New Mexico 1-0.

The Horned Frogs (7-6, 0-1) will play Air Force (2-9, 0-1) at home today.

The Falcons enter today’s match against TCU after a 3-1 loss to Wyoming last week. The Horned Frogs, currently 6th in MWC standings, and the Falcons, currently last in the MWC standings, could each make significant jumps in the standings being only one game into the conference slate.

TCU will look to pick up its offense after not scoring a single goal against New Mexico, despite being second in conference scoring with 1.91 goals per game.

Head soccer coach Dan Abdalla said the team needed to be sharper offensively and do a better job of protecting the ball.

“We were making it way to easy for New Mexico to gain possession because we would just give the ball away,” Abdalla said. “Our biggest thing this week was to work on our support and make sure we put ourselves in positions to have the ability to keep the ball.

The Horned Frogs may have comfort in playing again at home. At the last two home games, TCU outscored Stephen F. Austin and Texas Woman’s University, a combined 9-2.

Despite Air Forces’ subpar overall record, what matters is that they are even with the Horned Frogs in conference play, Abdalla said.

“They have the same record in conference as we have, so we certainly can’t look past anybody,” Abdalla said. “It’s a cliché, but every game (in conference) is a big game.”

Air Force is the type of team that will keep working and play intelligently, something that makes a soccer team dangerous, he said.

“The military teams are always extremely hard working and extremely organized,” Abdalla said. “They are going to be scrappy. They are going to be a team that if you turn your back on for one second, you are going to regret what takes place.”

The team has trained well the last three weeks, but training should translate into match play, Abdalla said.

“We still need to take it to another level, we still need to get sharper,” Abdalla said. “We have to raise the expectations. We expect to be competing for national championships. For every pass we make, for every tackle that we get in to it has to be with that attitude. That’s what we have emphasized this week, and we’ve seen progress in the right direction.”
