174 students, a record number, went on this year's trip.

Students trade their trash for treasure

Frog Trade, a first-time campus trading event in which students swap their unwanted goods, took place Thursday on the lawn of Sadler Hall. Eye patches were optional.

Chase Bruton, a sophomore supply chain management and marketing major, traded 144 eye patches, a deck of cards, a kite and a glow stick for a pair of shoes and some movies.

Bruton, who described himself as sustainable, said he has all kinds of useless things in his room, so he attended the event to trade up.

“I got some great stuff,” he said.

Those who organized Frog Trade were also pleased with how the event turned out.

“We had a lot of people come even before the event started to drop off their donation items,” said Tiffany Rogers, vice president of chapter development of the university’s Public Relations Student Society of America.

A portable solar panel was hooked up to a computer that played seasonal music. Hot chocolate and coffee were also available for traders and students passing by.

“They were really thrilled to see the solar panel,” Rogers said. “That’s (was) kind of like the center of attention at the event.”

Rogers said the solar panel that powered the music reminded students that Frog Trade was a sustainable event.

Some of the items donated included clothes, shoes, picture frames, video games and movies.

“Mostly clothes that people don’t want anymore,” Rogers said as she laughed. “Lots of T-shirts.”

Amiso George, an associate professor of strategic communication and advisor for PRSSA, said students were responsible for developing the idea of the trade session.

“The students came to me with the idea, and I thought it was great,” George said.

She said it took a lot of planning because of peoples’ busy schedules.

“I’m so proud of them … it seems to be working out really well,” George said.

She said this is an event that benefits everyone on campus, and the group plans to do it again in the spring.
