College students seem to have a reliance on caffeine to get them through lectures and late night study sessions, but there are healthier alternatives to power through the day.

Neeley Leadership Week kicks off with executive lectures

The Leadership Center and the Neeley School of Business are collaborating to bring guest speakers from TOMS Shoes, Starbucks and Kodak to campus during the TCU Leadership Week Jan. 25-29.

Jimmy Hopper, a senior history major and Student Development Services intern, said speakers include TOMS Shoes founder Blake Mycoskie, Sen. Florence Shapiro and Sandra Taylor, former senior vice president of corporate social responsibility for Starbucks and former vice president and director of public affairs for Kodak.

“It’s going to be a good opportunity to learn a lot of things along the lines of modern leadership and what it looks like today, both in the community and I guess, more specifically, within the TCU community, and how they can be better student leaders,” Hopper said.

Daniel Terry, assistant director of the Leadership Center, said students sign up individually to attend the events. He said they expect between 350 and 400 students, faculty, staff and community guests to attend the Friday night event alone.

“We’re kind of exploring this theme of what does it mean to be able to make a living and do good for other people,” Terry said. “Those two things are not mutually exclusive.”

Kate O’Carroll, a sophomore finance major, said attending the sessions would benefit her in the future as she prepares to apply for the business school’s BNSF Next Generation Leadership Program.
