Student Government Association representatives said they hope students attend the first Student Relations Town Hall meeting tonight at 7 p.m. in the student organizations area of the Brown-Lupton University Union so they can measure interest in SGA initiatives.
The SGA’s Student Organizations Committee formed the monthly meeting to hear the opinions from the student body and provide direct feedback to questions, SGA Student Relations Committee Chair Myra Mills wrote in an e-mail.
“We really hope the students will take advantage of getting to talk with peers about ideas and issues in a face-to-face atmosphere,” Mills wrote.
Christina Durano, SGA Student Relations Committee interim chair while Mills studies abroad, said the meeting will be an open forum to allow students to voice their concerns and questions in regards to issues on campus.
“It’s not anything formal,” Durano said. “It’s just a forum for students to talk to other students about their ideas and concerns.”
Durano said that along with the Student Relations Committee, other SGA committee chairs will be present at the meeting to allow additional feedback for students.
“Basically we just want to hear the student’s ideas.and make TCU better for the students,” Durano said.
The event has been advertised through TCU Announce, fliers and bulletin boards and the “What to do at TCU” newsletter, Durano said. SGA expects the attendance to range between 20 to 30 students who can give SGA “quality responses.”
“Even if we could get five answers to work with, it would be worthwhile,” Durano said.
The event is intended to be more discussion-based than Improve TCU Day, when students submitted ideas to improve the university by writing them down on note cards, Durano said.
The meeting will also gauge student interest in ideas submitted to SGA last semester through Improve TCU Day, such as the installation of academic vending machines, which sell Scantrons and other items, in the library and parking alternatives on campus, Durano said.
Callie Haley, a junior accounting major, said she plans to attend the meetings and hopes other students do the same.
“I definitely plan on going in the future and hopefully so will other students too, who maybe are not liking the way things are going at TCU and want to take ownership of their college experience,” Haley said.
Chick-fil-A nuggets will be provided at the meeting.
