The Horned Frogs rode stellarly combined pitching efforts from senior Paul Gerrish and junior Trent Appleby to beat the Texas State Bobcats 4-0 Tuesday night and end a two-game losing streak.
Head coach Jim Schlossnagle said he was impressed with Gerrish, whom he expected to only throw about 50 pitches. He ended the game with 87.
“(Gerrish) was able to finally command his pitches on the outside half of the plate,” Schlossnagle said. “It was a tough night to hit in our park, with the wind blowing the way it was, and he kept throwing strikes and kept (Texas State) swinging the bat – which is what you have to do.”
Gerrish allowed six hits and no earned runs in nearly six innings, while Appleby allowed one hit, while striking out three and walking no one in three innings.
It was a tough night for Texas State’s (11-8) starting pitcher Brian Borski, who gave up 10 hits and three earned runs in five innings facing the Frogs (16-4).
The Frogs struck first in the second inning, as sophomore center fielder Brance Rivera drove in sophomore Taylor Featherston.
“Rivera has been a great highlight for us,” Schlossnagle said. “He’s really given us something at the bottom of the order.”
Rivera had a hit and an RBI, along with a sacrifice hit in the fifth to score sophomore Jason Coats.
Coats saw his 18-game hitting streak broken Monday night at Dallas Baptist and said the team came into the game focused after their two-game losing streak.
“I think we put all of our focus on driving the ball up the middle,” Coats said. “We kind of got away from our approach (Monday) night, and I think we really focused (on that tonight).”
While Coats’ double-digit hit streak is over, senior Matt Curry began one of his own Tuesday. Curry now has a hit in each of the last 10 games. Curry was 2-4 in the game, as was senior Bryan Holaday. Featherston was 2-3 with two runs.
Freshman right fielder Josh Elander led all batters with three hits.
This weekend, the Frogs head to the Air Force Academy for a series against the Falcons.
