Tennis players Kayla Duncan and Christopher Price have been named TCU Student-Athletes of the Week for their performances in helping their respective squads win the Mountain West Conference championships this past weekend.
Both tennis teams posted three straight victories over the weekend in Las Vegas to earn their third MWC tournament titles in only five years as league members. The women’s team have now won six MWC titles overall when factoring in regular-season championships, while the men boast five.
Sophomore Duncan stepped up in the clutch for the TCU women’s team during Saturday’s 4-3 title-winning victory over San Diego State. Duncan went 2-1 overall during the weekend in singles, also downing UNLV’s Nives Pavlovic on Friday, 6-1, 7-5. In doubles, she paired with junior Katariina Tuohimaa to post a 2-1 showing that included a victory over UNLV’s 58th-ranked tandem of Kristina Nedeltcheva and Jana Albers.
Junior Price combined to go 5-0 in singles and doubles play for the Frog men’s team, including the title-clinching win at No. 4 singles in straight sets against SDSU’s Luis Rattenhuber, 7-6 (10), 6-2 on Saturday. In doubles, Price continued his roll with junior partner Emanuel Brighiu. The pair, now ranked No. 43 nationally, went 3-0 over the weekend and has now won nine straight matches overall.
Both Frog teams earned automatic bids to the NCAA Championships by winning the MWC’s tournament titles.
