Frogs dominate Bakersfield 7-0

The No. 6 Horned Frogs gained a 7-0 win over Cal State Bakersfield and wrapped up the regular season with a 13-0 record in weekend series and a 43-11 record.

Senior Matt Curry led the offense with a 3-for-3 day at the plate and drove in a run. TCU wrapped up the regular season a 13-0 record in weekend series and a 43-11 record.

Junior Steven Maxwell improved to 9-1 on the season with six shutout innings of work. He allowed just four hits, walked two and struck out six. Tyler Lockwood threw a scoreless seventh inning and Kaleb Merck a perfect eighth inning. Eric Marshall retired both batters he faced in the ninth and Erik Miller tallied the final out of the regular season with a strikeout.

A one-out error in the bottom of the first proved costly as the Frogs jumped out to an early 2-0 lead. After Bryan Holaday reached on the error, Jason Coats worked a walk to put two on with one out. Curry put the Frogs on top with a base hit through the right side. Taylor Featherston collected a two-out single to left to stake the Frogs to a 2-0 lead.

Maxwell found himself in a jam in the top of the second as the Roadrunners loaded the bases with two outs on a pair of walks and a base hit. Maxwell stranded the runners, getting Joey Mills to fly out to end the inning.

Curry worked a one-out walk in the third and moved to third on a base hit by Jimmie Pharr. Featherston collected his second RBI of the contest with a ground ball to make it a 3-0 contest.

Another error proved costly as the Frogs turned it into a 4-0 lead. Coats reached on the miscue to lead off the fifth inning. Curry followed with a double to move Coats on third and he scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Pharr.

In the sixth, Aaron Schultz led off the inning with a double down the left field line. Jantzen Witte singled home Schultz to put the Frogs in control with a 5-0 lead.

Lead-off doubles in the seventh and eighth innings turned into two more runs for the Frogs. Pharr drove in his second run in the seventh and Witte picked up his second RBI of the game in the eighth to wrap up the scoring for the Frogs.

TCU closes out the regular season with a 43-11 record. The Frogs will hit the road Monday for the Mountain West Conference Postseason Tournament. They will be the No. 1 seed in the tournament hosted by San Diego State. The tournament begins Tuesday afternoon with first round action. TCU will play its first game Wednesday night against the lowest-seeded team to advance on Tuesday.
