TCU defeated Tennessee Tech 62-7 Saturday despite the many mistakes the Horned Frogs made on the field, TCU head coach Gary Patterson said.

“We made too many mistakes,” Patterson said. “It doesn’t matter what the score is.”

TCU gave up many key plays due to penalties during the game, losing 75 yards in penalties alone to Tennessee Tech.

Quarterback Andy Dalton said, “It seemed like there were four penalties back to back to back…that just hurt us and we can’t have penalties to stop a drive.”

The Frogs lost one potential touchdown from a kick return made by wide receiver Jeremy Kerley because of an illegal block the Frogs made during his drive.

“You can’t be too mad, when you’ve got guys blocking hard for you, things will happen like this,” Kerley said. “As long as it doesn’t happen again, we’re good.”

During halftime Patterson said he told the team they needed to start acting like the fourth-ranked team in nation. Coming out into the second half the Frogs had fewer penalties, but still lost some key plays.

Senior safety Colin Jones said the team needed to work on eliminating mistakes like penalties, and that the team tried to do this during the second half. Despite the mistakes, the Frogs stayed strong through the duration of the game. In the fourth quarter they scored three touchdowns bringing the final score 62-7.

Patterson said he did not want to score over 60 points against his former employer Tennessee Tech because he does not believe in “style points,” according to GoFrogs.com.

“My problem is he is a friend of mine,” Patterson said. “He is one of those guys I learned from when I was a young coach.”

TCU started with an early lead against Tennessee Tech and scored a touchdown within less than five minutes of opening kickoff, made by redshirt freshman wide receiver Josh Boyce. Boyce’s touchdown was his first career touchdown and the second catch of his career. Boyce finished the game with three interceptions for 70 yards.

In the second quarter the Golden Eagles pushed past the Frog defense, scoring their first touchdown of the season.

The second half started similar to the first with continuous fumbles made by Tennessee Tech. The Golden Eagles opened the second half with a fumble that was recovered by the Horned Frogs. Dalton used the turnover to his advantage and rushed 19 yards to earn his first touchdown of the game.

Dalton’s rushing touchdown was his third of the season, tying his total of three from last season. Dalton broke another record Saturday and became the Horned Frog career leader in pass completions with 635 completions.

Junior kicker Ross Evans lost an extra point for the Horned Frogs by missing the PAT during the third quarter. The lost PAT broke Evans’ 47 consecutive PAT streak.

The Golden Eagles continued to fumble the ball and the Horned Frogs continued to make big plays out of the turnovers. The Frogs scored three touchdowns in the fourth quarter to end the game 62-7.

The Horned Frogs take on Big 12 opponent Baylor 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Amon G. Carter Stadium.
