In recognition of former president John F. Kennedy’s assassination 47 years ago this month, the Fort Worth Police Historical Association is inviting student journalists to learn about the event’s media coverage from a local journalist Tuesday night.

Phil Vinson, a TCU Press author who covered the Lee Harvey Oswald funeral in 1963, will address the complexities of covering one of the biggest news stories of his time.

Thomas Wiederhold, a retired Fort Worth police officer and vice president of the historical association, said the association invited Vinson after researching a collection of artifacts about the police’s role in the protection of Kennedy and later Oswald.

“The information is pretty skimpy. We only have one officer left that guarded Oswald’s body the night before his funeral,” Wiederhold said. “He can tell us about the funeral and the media perception of what was going on; we usually only get the police side.”

Vinson is a retired journalist and teacher from the University of Texas at Arlington who is still a teacher at heart, Wiederhold said. Because of this, the association invited student journalists from universities in the area.

The event will be held at 6 p.m. tonight at the Fort Worth Police and Fire Training Center. Admission is free and open to the public.
