In celebration of Veterans Day, a joint committee representing veterans from all military branches has coordinated several events this week, including a wreath-laying ceremony.

Senior strategic communications major John Harvey said the theme of this year’s celebration is “Reflections of service and sacrifice” of not only the veterans memorialized in Veterans Plaza in front of Reed Hall, but also the more than 200 veterans who are attending TCU.

The celebration will not include a 21-gun salute or anything that could remind veterans of what they have come back from, he said. Instead, the events are coordinated to help them feel connected to the university.

“All the events are mainly geared around trying to make these guys that are here realize that they’re home again,” said Harvey, who is a retired veteran who is helping to promote the events.

On Wednesday students can participate in a wreath-laying ceremony beginning at 9:30 a.m. Student Affairs is sponsoring an event beginning at 7 p.m. in the Student Activities Lounge of the Brown-Lupton University Union called Quilts of Care, where students can make quilt blocks that will be displayed in the Veterans Lounge.

Thursday will begin with a moment of silence, followed by a walk to honor veterans through Veterans Plaza at 11:30 a.m. Beverages and refreshments will be provided after the walk in Tandy Hall and Reed Hall.

Both days, students will be able see movies in the BLUU, visit the Veterans Lounge on the first floor in the BLUU and write cards to troops. Yellow ribbons to wear in support of troops will be passed out at several locations on campus, including Reed Hall, The Mary Couts Burnett Library and the Mary Wright Admission Center, to wear in support of troops.
