As temperatures drop, the Staff Assembly Community Service Committee has asked students, faculty and staff to donate winter coats of all sizes for middle school students.
Coats can be dropped off at various locations on campus and will benefit students at Kirkpatrick Middle School in Fort Worth Independent School District. The drive will continue through the winter, but committee members said they hoped to receive the majority of the coats before Nov. 30. New and used coats will be accepted.
Chair of the Community Service Committee, Richard Oliver, said members of the university’s Staff Assembly brought about 465 coats to the school last week and will bring about 100 more next week.
Drop-off locations include Mary Couts Burnett Library, Scharbauer Hall, the ID Card Center, the Housing & Residence Life office and the journalism office in Moudy Building South.
Oliver said he heard about the need at Kirkpatrick from his son, Jason Oliver, a TCU alumnus and former principal at Kirkpatrick.
According to its website, Staff Assembly consists of university staff members from all departments on campus and meets once monthly to discuss issues affecting staff. Oliver said the Community Service Committee’s main objective was helping people.
The next Staff Assembly event will be a toy drive Dec. 1 through Dec. 15 for students at Como Montessori School and surrounding areas, Oliver said. Boxes being used for coat donations will be used for toy donations in December.
