TCU has extended head football coach Gary Patterson’s contract through 2018.
TCU chancellor Victor Boschini and director of intercollegiate athletics Chris Del Conte announced Friday night that two years were added to Patterson’s original deal, according to a release.
As a private institution TCU is not obligated to release salary figures.
“Gary Patterson is simply the best football coach in America,” Del Conte said in a statement. “He has done a remarkable job in energizing a campus and community around his program and TCU as a whole.”
Prior to Patterson’s arrival on campus as defensive coordinator in 1998, the Horned Frogs had four bowl wins in their history.
No. 3 TCU defeated No. 5 Wisconsin 21-19 in the Rose Bowl to cap off a 13-0 season.
“To see a sea of purple in the stands at the Rose Bowl is a testament to what Gary and his staff have accomplished,” Del Conte said. “We couldn’t be more proud to have him as our coach and leader. He is a perfect fit for TCU.”
The Horned Frogs have won six conference titles with Patterson on staff with 12 bowl appearances in 13 years. The Frogs are 8-4 in bowl games with Patterson at TCU.
“Gary Patterson is an integral part of the TCU and Fort Worth communities,” Boschini said in a statement. “He has a great passion for the overall mission of our university and for providing our students with a positive experience, academically, socially and athletically.
“The TCU campus is a better place with Gary Patterson.”
The Horned Frogs are one of just four programs to rank in the top 25 of the current Associated Press poll and the top 25 of the Academic Progress Rate (APR).
“I would like to thank Chancellor Boschini, our Board of Trustees and Chris Del Conte for the support they provide in allowing us to have a football program that makes TCU and Fort Worth proud,” Patterson said in a statement. “Our administration’s commitment to the goals we have in our program have enabled us to be successful and to keep pushing forward.”
Patterson notables while coaching at TCU
Patterson led the Horned Frogs to at least 10 wins seven times in 10 seasons, including six seasons of at least 11 wins; he is the only coach in TCU history with more than two 10-win campaigns.
The Frogs have posted back-to-back undefeated regular seasons and are 36-3 in the last three seasons.
Patterson received nine National Coach of the Year honors in 2009.
His 98-28(.778) record is the best mark of the four coaches at TCU to be on the sideline for at least 100 games.
Patterson’s 98 wins are second on the Frogs’ career victory list, trailing only Dutch Meyer (109-79-13, .575). Meyer coached TCU to its 1935 and 1938 national championships.
Patterson’s .778 winning percentage is second nationally among active coaches with a minimum of five years experience.
TCU is 16-3 in its last 19 games against teams from leagues with automatic BCS bids.
In 10 seasons as a head coach, Patterson has coached 130 All-Conference selections, 13 first-team All-Americans, 11 Freshman All-Americans and two Academic All-Americans.
As TCU’s head coach, Patterson has had 24 players drafted and a total of 47 in NFL camps.
