The TCU track and field program compiled 11 first-place finishes at the Horned Frog Invitational Friday, competing against Baylor, North Texas, SMU, Texas State, Texas Tech and UT-Arlington at the Lowdon Track and Field Complex.

“It was a really good meet today,” TCU head coach Darryl Anderson said. “We had a lot of people step up and run well today. From Jessica Young running 11.14 in the first outdoor meet to the men’s 4×100 running 39.82 and Charles Silmon hitting 10.25 in the 100 meters. Overall, I thought that the Horned Frog Invitational was an exceptional first weekend of the outdoor season, not only here at TCU, but for the country. I think that when people see the results of the first outdoor meet of the year, they will be impressed with the performances of all of the schools.”

“I was very pleased with how smooth the meet went today,” Anderson said. “From the management of the meet to the officials and the performances of all of the kids that participated — everything went very well.”

Sophomore sprinter Charles Silmon enjoyed a pair of impressive outings Friday, turning in the top finish in the 100 meters with a time of 10.25, while also recording the best collegiate clocking of the day in the men’s 200 meters by taking the first heat at 20.82. The only runner that topped Silmon Friday was Olympic gold medalist Jeremy Wariner (20.71), running unattached.

Coming off of a second-place finish in the women’s 60-meters at the NCAA Indoor Championships, senior Jessica Young got her outdoor season off on the right foot by pacing the women’s 100-meter field with an initial time of 11.14. Freshman Veronica Jones followed with runner-up honors at 11.57.

Senior Season Zurko stole first place accolades in the men’s 800-meter run, edging out fellow Frog Jack O’Brien in the opening heat. Zurko, a Las Vegas, Nev., native clocked in at 1.49.89, just ahead of O’Brien at 1:49.99.

Senior Festus Kigen was also impressive Friday, finishing first overall in the men’s 1,500 meters with a time of 3:56.38. The race was the first individual run for Kigen since the NCAA Cross Country Championships in November. Freshman Tricia Terry excelled on the women’s side of the 1,500 meters, chiming in with the top time of 4:33.23.

In the relays, TCU’s men took first home a pair of first-place honors. The Frogs’ opened the afternoon with the fastest 4×100 time of the day, as Richard Knotts, Silmon, Mychal Dungey and Mark Barnes turned in a time of 39.82. The Purple and White also boasted the best 4×400 performance with the team of Lavon Collins, Jordan Pitts, Zurko and Matt Love breaking the tape at 3:09.19.

From the infield, sophomore Cameron Tabor continued to throw well for the Frogs. After taking the hammer throw title with a distance of 181 feet Thursday, the Norman, Okla., product finished second in the men’s discus (170-8) and third in the shot put (55-11). Sophomore Sara Talley led the way in the women’s javelin with a top toss of 124-4.

Other top field performances included Cameron Parker (23-9 ½) and Samantha Collins (19-7) earning runner-up honors in the long jump, while sophomore Saria Hawkins took the title in the women’s triple jump.

The high school division of the Horned Frog Invitational will begin on Saturday at 10 a.m. with the boy’s and girl’s long jump. TCU will next be in action at the Arizona State Invitational in Tempe, Ariz., March 26.
